Centro Storico — Getting Around

Getting‑Around

  • Metro – The closest Line A stops are Spagna and Barberini on the north‑edge of Centro Storico, just a 2‑min walk from the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. From there you can hop on the Line A southbound and reach Termini in just a handful of stops, the main hub for long‑distance trains and the airport shuttle.
If you’re at the Colosseum or near Cavour, take Line B – the Colosseo station sits right outside the amphitheatre, and Cavour is a short stroll to the southeast. Both lines skip the Pantheon, so you’ll need a 5‑minute walk east or west from the stations to get there.

  • Bus – Buses 40 and 64 run from Termini to the Vatican, passing through the heart of Centro Storico. They’re handy if you’re heading to St. Peter’s or the Vatican Museums and want to avoid a metro transfer. The hop‑on hop‑off frequency is roughly every 15 minutes during the day.

  • Walking – Centro Storico is almost entirely pedestrian‑friendly. From the Spanish Steps or Trevi you can loop around to the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, and the Colosseum in under an hour. A quick 10‑minute walk from Spagna takes you straight to the Forum and the Colosseum, while another 8 minutes south puts you at Cavour and the Piazza del Campidoglio.
For a leisurely stroll that covers most major sites, start at the Spanish Steps, head south along Via dei Condotti, loop through Piazza di Spagna, then down to the Pantheon and on to the Colosseum. The entire walk takes about 2–3 hours, depending on your pace and stops.

  • Entry Point from the City Centre – If you’re coming from the broad, bustling streets of the Trastevere or the modern hubs like EUR region, take the metro Line A to Barberini. It’s a quick 5‑minute ride and positions you at the heart of Centro Storico with excellent walk‑access to most attractions. Alternatively, hopping on a regional train from Termini and walking 15 minutes via the Via della Conciliazione leads right into Piazza Navona.
